Situated in the valley where the source of the Jaur River is located, Saint-Pons de Thomières is a village of concentrated history. The center of the ancient village is perfectly conserved and boasts architectural assets like an incredible Abbey-Cathedral and a fascinating museum dedicated to the Prehistoric era. This city of hidden gems reveals itself little by little along the banks of the Jaur. When the village was constructed in the VI century the river was a natural boarder, on the other side the church Saint-Martin-du-Jaur was built. Thus, we cross over to the left bank where Thomières, called the Lesser or village of the poor, stands with its Gascagne Tower. A bit further down the way the Chapel of Penitents, built in 1616, reveals its beautiful sculpted wood XVII century alter. Wander through the streets full of XVI and XVII century constructions until you reach the bridge that links it to Saint-Pons or the Enchanting City on the other side of the river.
As you go past the Comte Pons Tower, the Portanelle and the Saint-Benoit Tower, that were all part of the city walls, you will discover a magnificent Benedictine Abbey. Inside, among many other artifacts, you will find a stunning marble court, organs, and stalls sculpted in walnut wood. Built in 936 by the Count Raymond Pons from Toulouse, the building became a cathedral in 1318 when the city became the home to the Archbishop. After the French revolution is became a simple church. Fortress like, the church surprises every visitor with is majestic nature and the juxtaposition between its Roman and XVIII century Baroque style elements.
