The Saint-Chinianais : A Noble and Rich Land
Saint-Chinian is a county, but first of all it is a land. An appellation with controlled origins, the vineyards that it controls stretch out over more than 3,000 hectares of land. The area is blessed with a unique climate and one of a kind geological conditions that make the wines of Saint-Chinain some of the Languedoc Region’s best vintages.
Protected by the Caroux Mountain on one side, and on the other by the heights of the Espinousse Mountain, the vines are gown on different types of soils. From the shale in the north to the clay and limestone in the south the diversity gives the wines complex aromas. Here, winemaking is a tradition that goes back to the VIII century. Benedictine monks came to the valley in 780 and planted the first vineyard on a wild countryside field.
Located between the sea and the mountains, the Saint-Chinian area, or Saint-chinianais as the locals call it, is full of picturesque landscapes full of wild colors. Running water has sculpted and humidified the rocks creating beautiful landforms. From the green banks of the Orb River to the Vernazobres valley, the water flows freely and beckons everyone to participate in outdoor activities. The air is pure and full of perfumes that waft up from the flowering plants, pines, mimosa and orange blossoms; nature thrives in the soft Mediterranean climate.
The appellation Saint-Chinian is composed of about twenty villages, rich in tradition and history. An improvised tour might take you to the Monastery of Saint-Chinian that dates back to the XV century and shelters a majestic historically classified organ. Further in the north, the Archaeology Museum Berlou will take you back to the time that the first animals crawled on the planet. Take the time for a walk on the banks of the Orb River, and stop to enjoy a moment on one of the many beaches that seem like sanctuaries during hot summer days. Continue on to the charming village of Roquebrun that is perched on a rocky mountain. Wander in the lively village streets. At the highest point, explore the Mediterranean Garden, a marvel of plants and trees that sings a daily hymn to the local and exotic flora.
