When traveling along the Canal du Midi, it is an absolute must to make a stop in Somail. There you will discover the natural beauty of the countryside and the works of art on the banks of genius Pierre-Paul Riquet’s canal. Once an important port, and the nighttime break for those coming from Sète or Toulouse on the Post Barge, this village is the heart of the Minervois Countryside. Proud of its history, the tiny village has conserved its inn that is now a guest house and an old “glacière” where perishable goods were kept cold during the warm summer months. There is also a chapel where mass is celebrated every Friday. Take the time to admire the curve of the old bridge that crosses the canal. It is an exceptional place that attracts inhabitants and tourists alike.
