Capestang is a beautiful village, life here moves to the rhythm of the curants, it is an important stop on the Canal du Midi. Start your visit here with a trip to the 14 th century castle, where the archbishops of Narbonne frequently escaped to find themselves in the calm of the countryside. After a beautiful walk, one arrives at their peaceful getaway via the Pont de Saisse, one the lowest bridges on the canal built during the 17 th century, and then crossing the 19 th century Piétât Bridge, you've arrived at the majestic manor. The painted ceilings have been superbly conserved. The imposing Saint Etienne Monastery, built in the 13 th and 14 th centuries, provides an incredible example of gothic architecture. From its 43 m tall bell tower, enjoy the incredible panoramic view of the surrounding vineyards, Canal du Midi, and far on the horizon the Saint-just Cathedral in Narbonne. Looking south-west, the imposing peak of Canigou rises up into the sky ; the northern horizon is decorated by the Caroux Mountains, the Enserune Castle , and the Capestang Lagoon. This beautiful body of water has been an important source of revenue for the village since middle ages, the production of salt was a lucrative business. Today, it is classified as a Natura 2000 protected zone, and is home to many different species of birds ( Aigrettes, marsh harriers, teals, spoonbills, heron, and flamingos ).
