The light, colors, and omnipresent water are the reasons that Sète has become known as the Venice of the Languedoc Region. Built at the base of Mont Saint Clair between the Thau Lagoon, the sea, and the canals, the city of Sète is one of the Mediterranean’s largest ports. The smells of the sea and countryside here nourished the creativity of writer Paul Valery and singer George Brassens, two of the city’s most famous inhabitants. Canals separate the beautiful neighborhoods where the constant sunshine and water work together to reflect the colorful facades. Sète is not just a summer destination, but also a functioning authentic city year round.
Its Italian origins give some quarters the convivial feeling of southern Italy, like the "quartier haut" that overlooks the port. Many important painters come to Sète to experience its unique light and enjoy of its numerous cultural establishments. Museums and art galleries are abundant. Taste buds delight in their local culinary specialties like the bourride, stuffed mussels and squid, the rouille de seiche, tielles, oysters and other seafood.
In the heart of the city don’t miss the market where stalls overflow with freshness during all of the seasons. It is festive; some of the biggest summer events include St. Pierre with the fishers, Water jousting during St. Louis, Quand je pense à Fernande, and Jazz à Sete. Caressed by 300 days of sunshine per year, Sète, the capital of Thau country is an amazing experience !!
