Just the name of this tiny fisherman’s village, the smallest on the lagoon, makes mouths water. Its reputation for oysters is one of the best. Bouzigues also thrived long ago during the golden era of wine transport like so many of the other region’s ports. However, the industry crashed during the late 19th century, and thus at the beginning of the 20th century the people here began oyster and mussel farming by suspension. This method of production was only used in the area until 1945
Their know-how becomes a way of life along the coast where the farmers are liked up in charming buildings, waiting for you to come taste the fruit of their labor. One of the best times to visit is during the annual oyster festival on August 9th and 10th. Be sure to take the time to discover the Lagoon Museum, musée de l’Etang, that tells the story of this seaside village, the inhabitants, oyster and mussels in addition to traditional fishing. It is a charming place to take a lazy stroll while choosing one of the numerous restaurants for a decicous moment.
