Pezenas, a town of fairs and the Estates of Languedoc provincial assembly, was the chosen residence for Molière and his illustrious theatre. From 1647 the young Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière, travelled the Languedoc roads. He became an actor for the Estates assembly which was held in Pezenas, and for his royal highness Prince de Conti in 1653.
Today, the theatre tradition in Pezenas is just as strong with theatrical guided visits, performances, companies in residence, historical reconstructions and much more. The town retains the traces of its prestigious history with a fine array of harmonious architecture from the 15th-18th centuries, charming hôtels private town houses and paved streets.
The old town is entirely classed as a 'Protected Sector' and still looks much the same as when Molière and his company enjoyed performing in the town. With its exceptionally rich and varied historical and architectural heritage Pezenas bas been awarded the title of '"Ville et Métiers d'Art" (a town rich in art and crafts) ; there many arts and craftsmen, antique dealers and secondhand shops in the town.
Let yourself be transported into the whirlwind of the life and times of Molière, on show at the Scénovision. Complete your visit with a tasting of Pezenas wines and local delicacies such the Berlingots or the small Pâtés de Pézénas savoury pastries.
