Valras, even though it has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, owes its name to Valérius, a veteran of the 7th Legion. He built his first villa on the village heights. At that time the local farming inhabitants traded with the neighbouring village of Sérignan. It was not until the Sérinanais (Sérignan inhabitants) decided to newly cultivate the high ground that Valras integrated Sérignan.
Much later, from the mid 19th century, Beziers and Sérignan locals were the first enthusiasts for sea bathing and a tourist boom for the two communes followed. The first hotel in Valras was built in 1845. The opening of a train link in 1846 increased and democratised the attractions of bathing in Valras.
In February 1931 Valras became a separate commune. Fishing has always been at the heart of its economy and despite recessions, this activity is kept alive by a new generation of small businesses. In harmony with the fishing industry the leisure port developed. Its 130 moorings on the seasonal wharfs along the banks of the Orb, its beautiful protected beaches and a rich entertainment programme are all on offer for your pleasure.
Domaine La Yole. Wine has been produced at La Yole since 1771, but the Roman relics found on the estate prove that there have been vineyards here since the birth of Christ. Today, the estate offers a variety of white, rosé, red and sweet wines produced on clay limestones and silica sands, together with a range of local products with southern flavours.
