Agde has been a very active port since Antiquity. It was founded in the 6thc B.C. by Phocaeans. By the 18thc it was the largest commercial port in the Languedoc and, with its Cap, it has developed into the largest French seaside resort and one the key mainland ports. Life in Agde flows along under the influence of the waters surrounding it; the river Herault, the Canal du Midi and the Mediterranean Sea.  The Mont St Loup, the Conque cliffs and the isle of Brescou bear witness to the waters  which stopped the path of lava flowing from the Auvergne volcanoes some 700,000 years ago. Water, which has continually brought sustenance to the people living on its shores. In 1750 one third of the inhabitants earned their living at sea, and in the late 19thc almost one thousand boats moored in Agde port. Its privileged position on the shores of the Mediterranean makes it a key destination for commercial craft.

Produce such as wheat, cereals, olive oil, wine, fruit, wool, cork and marble passed through the port on the way to, or from, destinations around the world. The city has a rich heritage which can be seen in, amongst others, the cathedral, chapels, or the Ephèbe museum. The ocean reaches the Mediterranean at Agde with its spectacular landscapes and differing means of transport.

The meeting point of the Canal du Midi and the river Herault, at the round lock, can be enjoyed via the side canals by boat, bike or foot. The Cap at Agde has long been favoured by sailors. 'Racine', a state initiative to develop the coastline, led to the creation of the Cap d'Agde resort. Today, there is an immensely rich variety of water sports. A rich history and a promising future that will go with the flow.
