Situated near the Canal du Midi, not far from Béziers, the river port village of Colombiers has become an important touristic hotspot. Once it was simply mountains, but today there are 3 superposed tunnels with the canal du midi stretching out 165 meters. The first tunnel (17th century) was the first tunnel that could be navigated in history ! During the 19th century a tunnel was dug out for train tracks and the last of the three tunnels dates back to the 13th century. It was created to evacuated water from the now dry Montady-Colombiers swamps. On the surface lies a well-conserved portion the Roman trade route the Via Domitian, and at the very top you will find the ruins of a pre-Roman fortified camp from the second Iron Age. The Oppidum d’Ensérune is one of the most beautiful French archaeological sites.
