Gignac
Gignac sits at the heart of the Herault Valley, on rich wine growing land and at the crossroads between the mountains and the coast, and between Montpellier and the Larzac plateau. Its history is very present, with an astonishing wealth of facades, ancient doorways and fountains which can be found hidden in the old streets.
The church of Notre Dame-de-Grace stands on a site full of traditions and histories.
It is the spot where an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess Vesta was built, followed by a succession of religious edifices. The current building dates to the 17th century and its Florentine style facade is rather unusual for the region. The centre of the village can be visited the church of Saint Pierre-aux-Liens which was built after the Wars of the Religions.
Local traditions are well respected and the game of Tambourin is actively practised by the award winning Gignac Tambourin Club.
The village mascot, celebrated by the Gignacois locals, is the donkey.
Vineyards on lands surrounding the village have always produced excellent quality wines with an international reputation.
