It is the link between Nîmes and Montpellier. Its 26000 inhabitants live here, just on the edge of the beautiful Camargue region. Close to the sea and the Languedoc Region planes, its location is exceptional. The Pescalunes (moon fishermen in Occitan) excel at perfecting their art of good living daily. The name given to the population of Lunel is associated with an ancient poetic legend that goes back to the time when one could travel to the Grau-du-Roi by river. It is said that a fisherman tried to fish for the moon with a broken net in the canal of Lunel.

The city and its inhabitants are very attached to bull traditions. In July during Pescalune (the festival of Lunel) these traditions are at their finest with the abrivados and bandidos, 100 bulls and 100 horses are unleashed, the roussataïo, traditional clothing parades, bodegas, “courses camarguaises” where men try to grab items attached to a small bull’s horns, the novillada and many other events.
Lunel’s personality is naturally affirmed by its history, its culture and its architecture. The Vesse Bridge, the Médard Museum, ancient prisons, and many other structures speak of its history. It is also know for its Muscat wine. Last summer’s vintage did particularly well at the International Agricultural Conference in Paris where it was awarded over 5 medals. The vineyards that are implanted here give life to dry, sweet and even sparkling Muscat. It is present on all of the tables, for the aperitif, during dinner, and dessert !
Lunel is also known for its pleasant lifestyle and beauty. In 2012 it was awarded second place in the competition of villages with the most flowers. Its canal, arboretum, shaded patios along Cours Gabriel Péri, the diversity of the markets, the market halls in their beautiful Baltard Style building, and the Museum Métard with its ancient prisons are just of few of its marvels. All of these things, along with numerous events make the city interesting to discover !
All year long the city hosts numerous cultural events and many convivial festival are organized. During the summer the city turns to the canal where little waterside bars host fireworks watchers under the stars on August 15th. People enjoy the green paradise at Jean Hugo Park. The Jazz Festival gets everyone dancing and outdoor movie showings are perfect for summer relaxation. Come and discover the charms of the Pescalune city.
